Parish Field Return For Westies (
January 29, 2010)
WESTFIELD Football Club is relishing the prospect of returning to its Parish Field home tomorrow (Saturday).
The visit from Loxwood will be the first match to be played at the ground since the clubhouse was destroyed by fire back on September 20. Kick-off is 2.30pm.
Joint manager Tony Harris said: “We’re looking forward to getting back, it’s a major part of Westfield. Our home form’s always been good and we’re looking to carry on that tradition.
“I believe the changing facilities are pretty much done. They’re not completely finished in terms of decoration, but they are functioning and the clubhouse is starting now.”
While the ground has been out of match action for more than four months, Westfield haven’t even been able to train there as the clubhouse lights were destroyed in the fire.
Their anticipated homecoming promises to be a tough one, though, because Loxwood are top of Sussex County League Division Two and unbeaten in their last 12 matches.
They also ran out easy 5-1 winners in the reverse fixture in early October, and although missing several key players, Harris admitted Westfield crumbled on that occasion.
“They’re top of the league so they’re going to be a decent side,” Harris continued, “but I’m hoping we can give a better account of ourselves this time.”
Lee Wood was hoping to train on Tuesday night after missing last weekend’s 4-2 win at Midhurst & Easebourne through injury, while Danny Woodley also sat that match out having suffered a reaction to training twice last week.
Harris added that he is hopeful of signing a replacement for defender Kingsley Parsons, who left to join Bexhill United at the end of last week after just three months at the club.
Eighth-placed Westfield will be back in action on Tuesday night when they make the short journey to third-placed Sidley United. Kick-off at Gullivers is 7.45pm.
The Parish Field was due to host a Reserve Section (East) fixture between Westfield and Peacehaven & Telscombe last weekend only for the persistent rain of Friday to intervene. The seconds travel to Haywards Heath Town tomorrow.
Westfield are also looking forward to an evening with top comedian Jo Brand at the White Rock Theatre tomorrow in aid of the club’s Phoenix Fund.
