Westies Looking For More Derby Delight (January 01, 2010)

DUNCAN Jones is hoping Westfield’s feisty Boxing Day win away to Rye United means they have finally turned the corner during what has been a difficult season.

Danny Woodley and Tom Archer - with his first goal in senior football - fired The Parishioners to a deserved 2-1 success in a keenly-contested derby which saw the home side finish with only nine players.

Prior to the match Westfield - homeless since September’s fire at The Parish Field - had lost 10 out of 13 to leave them well adrift of the top teams in Division Two of the Sussex County League.

“I would like to think we have turned the corner but it’s been such a yo-yo season,” said Jones before casting his eye over another derby at the Recreation Ground tomorrow (Saturday), kick-off 1.45pm. “We have got to go to Little Common and put in a performance, it’s all about consistency.”

The club’s joint manager was full of praise for the way his players took the game to Rye and how well they adapted to a recently-introduced 3-4-3 formation. “It’s been a tough period for the club and more than a few of the lads have shown what they are made of,” he went on.

Defensively, Westfield kept things nice and tight as Lawrence Brand - better known as a midfielder - mopped up alongside the equally impressive Warren Parsons and Archer.

They were finally breached by Danny Leach’s scrambled finish three minutes from time and Jones admitted he wasn’t happy. “I wanted a clean sheet, we never looked like conceding until that sloppy goal.”

Westfield take on a Common side who also enjoyed a good win last weekend - 2-1 away to in-form Sidley United - so a tricky encounter is on the cards.

“They have been the real surprise of the season. We played them at our place and they were a very good side,” added Jones who could soon face something of a selection headache for the first time this season as a whole host of players return.

Victory would see eighth-placed Westfield leapfrog their opponents in the standings although Common have three games in hand.

The team hopes to be back playing at The Parish Field by the middle of the month.
