Jones: We are good enough to beat Sidley (
December 18, 2009)
DUNCAN Jones says injuries are not totally to blame for Westfield Football Club’s disappointing run.
The Parishioners’ joint manager believes the sides they are fielding are good enough to be getting results in Division Two of the Sussex County League.
Ahead of the local derby at Sidley United tomorrow (Saturday), Jones said: “We’re having a torrid time (with injuries), but the strength of the sides we’re fielding is still good enough to be winning.
“I still look at that 60 points and think we’re capable of hitting it. At the moment we’re just so sporadic, we’re like a Jekyll and Hyde side. But they’re training hard and working at it, and hopefully they’ll start to reap their rewards.”
Westfield will go into tomorrow’s clash - which was slotted in at the start of the week in place of the advertised trip to Clymping - as underdogs.
Tenth-placed Westfield have lost 10 of their last 13 games in all competitions, whereas Sidley are up to fifth in the table on the back of a nine-match unbeaten run.
The sides have already met once this season with Sidley winning 1-0 after extra-time in a Hastings & District FA Senior Cup first round tie a couple of months back.
Kingsley Parsons joined Westfield from Sidley around that time and Chris Agutter seemed set to follow him before having a last minute change of heart.
“The side we field will be good enough to beat Sidley,” Jones added, “and I know none of them will want to lose.”
Dan Foster, Jones, David Miller and Carl Morris are injured, and Graham Morris is away, but Westfield are hopeful that Peter Baker will return following illness.
Westfield have bolstered their ranks with the signing of Nathan Harding, a tenacious left-sided player who has previously turned out for Rye United.
Jones said: “He’s a good addition. The reason he came to the club is because he heard about the way it was being run professionally and he likes the idea of the challenge".
