Derby Delight for Westies (
December 26, 2009)
Westfield produced one of there best performance under the management of messers Jones & Harris, they were the words of the former after defeating fierce rivals Rye United at The Salts this morning.
The Westies applied themselves superbly throughout the whole game and not only out battled the hosts but also outplayed them at times, which is not always the case when the two sides meet.
The last time the Westies visited the Salts they were on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline in what was a dire performance. Today was a complete contrast and the Westies deservedly took the lead after 30 mins when Danny Woodley fired home from twenty five yards out against his former club.
Another former Rye man Andy Garmen was a continual thorn in the hosts side and he was on the receiving end of two fouls which resulted in two of Rye's three subs being sent off, the first and the harshest was Jimmy Watson and the second being Nathan Godden who brought down Garmen when through one on one with John Gardener.
Before the sending offs Tom Archer had headed Westfield into a deserved two goal lead. Despite a late rally from the hosts which saw them pull one back with 5 minutes to go, nothing was going to deny the Westies all three points.
