10th April 2008 - Hard Work Pays Dividends
Wednesday night saw us make the short trip to Sidley in the Hastings Senior Cup Final, we went there looking to secure the clubs first ever Senior Trophy after a number of near misses in the County Div 2 cup and the Hastings Senior Cup we felt confident of coming away with the right result.
We were given a boost before the game when Dunc' declared himself fit enough to be in the squad although we were still without key players from our squad Ben, Danny & Drinky.
I felt we started the first half a bit nervy as Sidley tried to press us back with a direct style of play but gradually we began to feel our way into the game and started to play some good football. I felt that we were the better team and should've gone in 1-0 up at the break but were denied but a linesman's flag. Loz did well out on the left wing to find Dom who directed his header goal wards and as Pete Newstead saved the header Bakes stepped up to tap home from 2 yards only to see the flag go up.
We knew that going up the slope in the second half we'd have to defend well as they would try and press us back which they duly did but we stood up to this and looked a threat when we went forward, out of the 2 teams we looked to play to feet more and create chances but it was a half when both defences looked solid.
This led to extra time and we again defended resolutely whilst keeping the ball well, I felt that as the game wore on we looked the more likely to score and it was from a good move involving Loz, Dunc, Bakes & Boz that saw Bakes hauled down in the area. As the referee blew Dunc' tapped the ball home only for the goal to be ruled out and a penalty given, thankfully no harm was done as Bakes coolly tucked away the penalty to put us 1-0 up at the break, the second half saw Sidley push for the equaliser but we held firm and to keep a deserved clean sheet and win our first Senior trophy.
It was obviously a great feeling for everyone connected with the club to secure this and is a tribute to everyone that despite our facilities and resources we've knocked out 2 County 1 sides to secure the trophy, everyone involved with the club has contributed to this and not just the 14 players that played on Wednesday but the whole squad. Most of the players have been at the club for a long time now and it made the win all the more special to do it alongside a group of lads that are there because they want to be and not for money, the team spirit has always been one of our strong points, hopefully this win will be the start of things to come as we look to move to the much needed to new ground.
This week we make the visit to recently crowned champions East Grinstead, obviously this won’t be easy but we'll be keen to test ourselves against the best team in our league and are very much going there for 3 points as we look to finish the season on a high. I expect a few of us will be stiff after 120 minutes of action on Wednesday but we'll be determined to avenge the 3-1 defeat at our place earlier in the season.

7th April 2008 - We Could Have Snatched A Point
Saturday saw us make the journey to Rustington, we knew that this wouldn't be an easy game but went there determined to pick up 3 points in order to put us firmly in the race for a top 3 finish.
The first half saw Rustington very much on the front foot as they utilised the strong wind to their advantage and pressed us back by constantly knocking the ball in behind us. However, we did manage to threaten on the counter attack with AJ clipping the post and Bakes lifting a lob just wide. Eventually the pressure told though and it came from one of our attacks, we lost the ball on the edge of their box and they cleared into our left back channel, the forward just managed to get their first ahead of Block who did well to hold him up at first but then he managed to wriggle free and as he turned into our box he went over Carl's outstretched leg for the linesman to signal a penalty. Based on possession and chances created I felt that Rustington deserved to go in ahead at the break as they looked a constant threat when they attacked.
We started the second half determined to get on top and I felt that we pretty much dominated possession without looking like scoring, we didn't really create any clear chances although Graeme did well to nip in front of the keeper but lifted his header over the bar. We defended a lot better in the second half and pressed the game a lot better but we were disappointed not to create any real chances and should've used the ball better.
Looking back I felt that we deserved a point from the game but credit to Rustington they've had a great first season in County 2 and look a good bet to make the top 3 this year.
On Wednesday we visit Sidley in the Hastings Senior Cup and are going there determined to win the club's first senior trophy, we're confident of getting a win but know it won't be easy. Despite Sidley's league position they've enjoyed a great run of results recently leaving them a good chance of avoiding the drop.

26th March 2008 - Windy Does Have A Left Foot
The visit of Southwick provided an opportunity for us to avenge the defeat we suffered there earlier in the season and to also look to continue our aim of pushing up the table. The first half was a fairly even encounter and we took the lead through a great strike from Bakes, there were chances at both ends but we went in 1 up at half time. The first half probably wasn't the best to watch but the weather was a major influence on the game as we experienced rain, snow, wind and sun, just what you'd expect as we approach Spring in England.
The second half thankfully saw the weather settle down which in turn saw the game liven up as we took a 2-0 lead through Dom, however, we conceded what we felt was a sloppy goal but from Southwick's point of view was a great strike. Despite this disappointment we managed to extend our lead to 3-1 when Windy scored a great individual goal running with the ball from his own half and finishing confidently with his left foot, despite cries of open the gate and f###ing pass it Windy showed that he truly is a classy LEFT back.
To Southwick's credit they didn't lay down and accept defeat as they again pulled a goal back which we again were disappointed with to make it 3-2, however, all nerves were settled when Boz finished off a flowing move and then Bakes finished with a fine volley from the edge of the box to wrap up a 5-2 win. I felt that we deserved the win and that as well as playing some excellent football in patches also showed strong defensive resilience although as I mentioned we were disappointed with the 2 goals against.
This Saturday we welcome Seaford and again we'll be looking to continue our climb up the table as we look to close in on the top 5 as well as avenging defeats we suffered at Seaford in the league and cup this season. I'm sure that the game will be a battle as our clashes with Seaford tend to be, it certainly won't be easy. We know that as a side they'll work hard and look to put themselves about, however, we also know that they are a side that have the ability to play positive attacking football as they showed when we met earlier this season. I'm confident that if we show the same desire and attitude that we have done recently then we're good enough to pick up a much needed 3 points.

19th March 2008 - Welcome Three Points
Saturday saw us entertain Littlehampton as we looked to get back to winning ways after our defeat to Crawley Down, the first half saw Littlehampton put us under pressure but only create 1 clear cut chance which Will did well to save, however, despite being on the back foot we showed a willingness to defend and took the lead through Bakes and managed to hold this lead through to half time.
The second half saw a more even game and we again defended resolutely, I felt that we should have finished the game off as we created a number of decent chances, each time Littlehampton pushed forward looking for an equaliser we seemed to catch them on the break and looked good value to extend our lead, despite these chances we could've conceded an equaliser deep into injury time when they managed to get in behind us and as the cross found it's way to their centre half he thankfully fired over from 12 yards out.
Easter brings 2 games in 3 days and on Saturday we welcome Southwick, they've improved over recent weeks and will provide a stern test although if we can defend like we did last week then I'm confident we can avenge the defeat we suffered at their place earlier in the season, Easter Monday we travel to Wealden looking to avenge the heavy defeat we experienced at our place earlier this season. Come Monday evening we could be back amongst the hunt for a top 3 finish providing we can pick up 6 points and other results go our way, however in order for this to happen we need to display some consistency and ensure that we all turn up determined to put in a performance and have the necessary desire required to win these games.

13th March 2008 - We Were Not At Our Best
Saturday saw us visit promotion chasing Crawley Down who have recently enjoyed some major ground improvements, the wind was going to have a major impact on this game and we went with it in the first half with the plan to press them back and put them under pressure, however, this didn't quite go to plan as our passing wasn't up to standard and we constantly gave possession away by looking for the 'killer' ball rather than showing patience.
Despite not retaining possession as well as we could our set pieces caused them danger and it was from a corner that Dunc' gave us the lead through a close range finish.
Half time saw us take a 1-0 lead into the dressing room and we came out determined to improve upon our first half performance, however, with only a few minutes gone we gave away a free kick which was launched long into our box, a rare mistake from Will saw the ball slip between his gloves and drift in to level the game. This gave Crawley Down added confidence and they went onto take a 3-1 lead through goals that we were disappointed with. In an attempt to get back into the game we reverted to a back 3 and this paid dividends when Dommie reduced the arears to 3-2 from another corner. Despite pressing for an equaliser we ended up on the end of a 3-2 defeat, Crawley Down will feel that they deserved the win but yet again we come away thinking that we could've done better.
Saturday sees us entertain Littlehampton, they've had a mixed season but are still chasing a promotion place. We go into this game looking to avenge the 4-1 defeat we experienced at their place earlier in the season. I'm confident that if we show a positive attitude and enjoy the game then we will be in with a good chance of picking up 3 points.

29th August 2007 - We Did Not Do Ourselves Justice
We went into our game at Whitehawk expecting a tough challenge but felt that if we played our normal game and gave a good account of ourselves then we'd have every chance to progress. As it turned out we didn't do ourselves justice and Whitehawk ran out comfortable 3-0 winners. There were no complaints from our stand point as we didn't get into the game and apart from a free kick from Peter Baker that some how evaded everyone in the first half we didn't start to play until we were 3-0 down and the game was over.
We were all looking forward to getting this game out of our system and were glad that we would entertain Lingfield on the Bank Holiday Monday, however, Lingfield had to forfeit the game as they couldn't raise a side, on a plus it meant that we took the 3 points and now have 9 from 9 although we'd have preferred to have played and won.
Our next game is back in the league with a visit to Southwick who have struggled in their start to the season having only taken 1 point from a possible 15, we'll go into this game determined to take all 3 points but aware that if we don't play well then we'll be up against it.

20th August 2007 - Excited By Good Start
A second home game and a second successive win.
We expected a tough test against Midhurst and certainly didn’t have things our own way, although we came in at half time thinking that we could've had a couple of goals in a first half that I felt we edged. We certainly would've gone in 1-0 to the good had it not been for a great goal line clearance by a Midhurst defender when Ashley 'Lego Man' Paine flicked a header goal wards.
We came out for the second half determined to take the initiative and we did that after 15 minutes when Danny Pepper who's started the season in great from scored his second goal in as many games. We were certainly on top but had a stroke of fortune when a hooked cross shot from the visiting captain which was destined for the far corner was headed over the line from 2 yards only for the linesman to disallow the goal for off side. Within minutes we killed the game off when a half volley from Peter Baker found the corner of the net.
Next week we face a tough test when we visit Whitehawk from County 1, last years Div' 1 runners up, in the John O'Hara cup on the Saturday. This is going to be a huge test and will give us a good insight into what we can achieve this season. I expect us to stand up to the challenge and give Whitehawk as good as we receive with the obvious aim to progress to the next round. If we can take this significant scalp then we will gain even more confidence in ourselves and I'm sure it will boost our campaign this year.
On Bank Holiday Monday we go back to league action and entertain a Lingfield side that have won 2 and lost 1 of their opening 3 league games, we'll go into this game determined to make it 3 wins from our first 3 league games and continue our challenge at the top end of the table.
Tony
15th August 2007 - Encouraging Start
Saturday saw us kick off our 2007-08 campaign with a 3-1 victory at home to Lancing.
Prior to the game we were dealt 3 injury blows with Gavin Bourne, Jamie Podmore and Chris Smith joining long term absentee Duncan Jones on the treatment table, however, we were still confident of taking maximum points and started the game brightly determined to get on top early. This was a big 3 points for us and there was a lot of hard work and desire shown by all in the side as well some eye catching football being played. Looking back I felt we thoroughly deserved all 3 points and the only down side was conceding a late consolation goal.
Before the game we held a minute silence to mark the 1st anniversary of our former team mate Graeme Kempster and I'm sure he'd have looked down with a smile on Saturday afternoon as the team's commitment and work rate epitomised Graeme as a player.
With our midweek fixture away to Peacehaven being postponed our next game is a visit from Midhurst who will no doubt come into the game full of confidence on the back of their win at a fancied Wealden side last week. I'm sure it will be a tough game but if we want to improve upon our best ever finish last year and achieve the ambitions that we all have then we need be looking to pick up maximum points from our home games and this will be no different on Saturday.

4th April 2007 - Big Weekend Ahead
The Captain is missing in action, so I’ve been asked by our illustrious web and programme administrator if I could try and fill his sizeable shoes for this week. As I said to him ‘I can but try!’, the little bald fellow who where’s the armband casts a big shadow!
It’s been somewhat of a rollercoaster of a week, seeing us put in a somewhat lack-lustre performance against Lingfield, yet running out comfortable winners, and then travelling down to Lancing midweek where we saw ourselves comfortably controlling the game, yet sadly only coming away with a point; our play in the last third letting us down on a blustery night.
It’s left us 9 points behind Pagham with a game in hand and a trip to the Nyetimber Lane yet to come. We’ve made life difficult for ourselves to an extent this season, dropping costly points to lesser teams, but even so, both we and Pagham have some tough games to come, and at the risk of sounding too much like a cliché, there’s still a lot of football left to play this season.
This Easter weekend could prove to be crucial. On Saturday we welcome a Crawly Down side that are fighting for their lives and then on Monday see Duncan Kneller’s Seaford come to the Parish Field. Nothing but 6 points will do as we desperately need to keep the pressure up on the leaders, yet neither game will be easy and both I’m sure will make for entertaining viewing.
The atmosphere in the dressing room remains positive, I truly believe with the squad we have, which I’d say is comfortable the best I have played with in my time here, we are well capable of doing what needs to be done, and hopefully, if a few results go our way, can still find ourselves sitting top of the table come the end of the season.
Always a pleasure, never a chore.

29th March 2007 - Massive Win
We went into the game at Mile Oak fully aware that a win would put us into second spot in our pursuit of leaders Pagham, however, it was Mile Oak who started the brighter and deservedly took the lead after 15 minutes, Gav had made 2 great saves but disappointingly for us Mile Oak put away the third rebound. We huffed and puffed but didn't seem to get to grips with the home sides 4-3-3 system until about 35 minutes in. Eventually our work rate and desire resulted in Dunc' bundling home from inside the 6 yard box to draw us level, we'd have gladly gone in all square at half time as we hadn't played well but we managed to keep the pressure on for the final 5 minutes of the half and this resulted in Danny Pepper sending us in to the break 2-1 up, Loz hit a 30 yard pinpoint diagonal ball into the left hand corner of the Mile Oak area and Pepps showed a fantastic first touch to leave the aggressive Mile Oak centre half on his back side before rifling into the far bottom corner.
We came out for the second half knowing that this game was far from over and I felt that to start with we were the better side, although Mile Oak were not out of the game by any means. Pepps had a great chance to put us 3-1 up when Dom got in behind the home sides back line and pulled the ball back to leave Pepps with an open goal but just as we all felt he couldn't miss the ball took a nasty bounce off the pitch and caught Danny unaware to lift the ball over. However, we didn't have to wait long for the decisive third goal when good work from Pepps found Dom who in turn put an inch perfect pass in behind the back line for Dunc to calmly slot pass the on rushing goal keeper.
If we thought the game was done and dusted then we were given rude awakening when the home side hit the bar and gradually built more pressure up which resulted in us dropping deeper and deeper and not retaining the ball. Just as the game was drawing to a conclusion the pressure from Mile Oak finally told when a high ball into the area caught out Gav and the ball dropped in to the far corner to set up a frantic final 5 minutes. Thankfully we managed to hold on to take all 3 points.
Saturday sees us welcome Lingfield in another must win game as we battle to force our way back into the title race, we've beaten Lingfield at home already this season and are confident of picking up all 3 points but having been beaten away at Lingfield when we pretty much dominated the game we'll all be aware that Lingfield will be more than up for the game especially after they beat East Grinstead 1-0 on Tuesday. The importance of picking up all 3 points on Saturday is enforced by the fact that Pagham face a tough visit a St Francis who themselves are chasing hard after an indifferent start to the season. We're all hoping that come 6.00pm on Saturday we'll only be 4 points behind Pagham with a game in hand and still to play them at their place in the coming weeks.
Tony
27th March 2007 - Vital Victory
Saturday saw us welcome a Steyning team that has reached the Division 2 cup final and won their last 3 games scoring 13 goals in the process, this included an impressive 4-2 win at Midhurst so we knew that we were in for a difficult game.
We started the game brightly and put them under pressure all over the pitch but despite being on top it took us half an hour before we went 1-0 up through Danny Pepper's neat finish at the near post, strangely the goal came just as Steyning were starting to get back into the game. The game had turned into an even encounter although defensively we were holding firm, that was until a break down our right hand side resulted in the visitors left winger getting to the by line and pulling the ball back but instead of finding a team mate the ball hit Carl Morris on the arm and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot for a penalty which was duly converted.
We went into the break at 1-1 and started the second half in the same way as we did the first, but for some reason after about 10 minutes we went more direct and became to predictable, this enabled the visitors to get a foot hold in the game and put us on the back foot for about 10-15 minutes when they were unlucky with a couple of shots from distance.
Eventually we managed to find some composure and got back into the game, we finally re-took the lead when we won the ball back in midfield and the ball was played out to Mark Drinkwater who's first touch after coming on as substitute was a pass into Dominic Clarke who in turn fed Duncan Jones coming in from the left hand side to put us 2-1 up with a neat finish into the far corner from just inside the box.
The relief throughout the side was clear to see, especially on the face of Dunc who for him had being going through a bit of a barren spell lately (first goal since the end of December). There was still 15 minutes remaining and Steyning were still in the game, they went close through an excellent strike on the volley by their forward at an angle from the left hand corner of the box but we were all relieved to see the shot drop just wide, however, we had further chances to have finished the game off but these came and went.
On reflection I felt that we deserved the 3 points as we created more clear cut chances but credit to the visitors they were never out of the game, we travel to Mile Oak on Wednesday for another difficult game against a team that will be full of confidence after beating Storrington 4-0 on Saturday. The last few weeks results have gone our way and Saturday's win came at the right time for us, we hope that Saturday's win is the start of another winning run and that we can take all 3 points on Wednesday to further enhance our title credentials.
Tony
20th March 2007 - Draw Was All We Deserved
We went into the game at home to an inform Broadbridge Heath determined to get back to winning ways and to pull ourselves back into contention for the title, although the effort was there we never got started and our overall game was quite sloppy this was summed up when we conceded a goal from a free kick allowing a free header in our area. Even after falling a goal behind we were still not quite at the races and we fell 2 down to another goal that we were all disappointed to concede.
The way we were playing it was going to take a something special to drag us back into the game and that came courtesy of Carl Morris' cracking half volley from about 20 yards that went like a bullet into the top right hand corner. This put us back in the game and meant we went in 2-1 down at half time.
We came out for the second half determined to take all 3 points and from the re-start we started to create numerous chances that came and went, even though we were playing better it was still an even contest with Broadbridge Heath giving as good as they got. We finally managed to find a patch of form in the last 20 minutes which meant that we were pretty much camped in the oppositions half and when Danny Pepper scored with a header with 5 minutes remaining we felt that we could push on and take all 3 points but unfortunately it wasn't to be.
Looking back a draw was probably a fair result as we didn't really start playing until the last 20 minutes and the visitors certainly gave as good as they got for most of the game
Tony
13th March 2007 - Lightening Can Strike Twice
Saturday saw us welcome Sidlesham in a game that we needed to win to get ourselves back on track, we started the game in a similar fashion to the week before creating chances for fun but as with the week before chances came and went, although we created chances with ease we didn't have the same fluidity and drive as we had last week. It was almost to easy for us and we were made to pay the price in the first half when Sidlesham managed a counter attack from our corner and broke away to score a sloppy goal from our point of view.
We went in at half time 1-0 down and knew that if we could up the tempo then we'd have a good chance of turning the game around but the longer the game wore on the more desperate we seemed to become opting for a more direct approach when a bit of patience and confidence was required.
The most disappointing thing to come out of the last 2 games is that our excellent home record has suffered 2 damaging defeats at a time in the season when we need to be winning. It's not often players pick up a senior medal let alone league winners medal and as a side we're all determined not to let our chance slip away, this week we entertain Broadbridge Heath in a must win game for us, we're confident that we can pick up the 3 points but know that we can't take anything for granted and will give Broadbridge Heath the respect that they deserve.
Tony
7th March 2007 - Missed Chances Prove Costly
We went into our home game against Storrington full of confidence that we could pick up 3 more vital league points to further push our title credentials and started off in promising fashion, we seemed to create chances every time we went forward but a mixture of bad luck, good defending/goal keeping and bad finishing meant that we came in at half time all square.
The message to the boys was keep playing as you are and one will go in, we certainly all felt that once we scored one then the flood gates would open, however, we all know that football has a habit of kicking you in the teeth when you least expect it. Midway through the second half Storrington launched a counter attack and we were caught out defensively when they broke through our back line to take the lead, we started to stream forward at every chance and really gave it our all but somehow the Storrington goal remained in tact.
The disappointment of losing was softened by the fact that only Pagham picked up maximum points and that we hadn't lost to much ground.
Tony
27th February 2007 - Comfortable In The End
After last Saturdays victory against Pagham we welcomed the visit of Southwick with confidence that we could pick up 3 valuable points to push ourselves further up the table and with the current leaders (Midhurst) game being postponed it meant that this would be our game in hand on them.
We started the game well and had created numerous chances before DannyPepper put away AJ's inviting cross in a first half that I felt we dominated with out playing at our best, by all accounts we should have gone in at half time in a comfortable position but we only managed to score the 1 goal and went in at half time 1-0 up.
The second half started in a similar fashion to the first half and we scored a deserved second through again through Danny, this should have been the signal for us to push on and kill the game off but we sat back and became over confident allowing Southwick to come back into the game and when the referee awarded a dubious penalty which was duly converted it left those watching feeling slightly nervous about points being dropped.
However, we were soon awarded a penalty of our own when man of the match Pepps was brought down when through on goal and this allowed Duncan Jones the opportunity to seal the 3 points from the spot.
I felt that we were the better team and that we deserved the win but I've seen us play better, however, all that matters is that we picked up 3 points which meant we moved into 2nd place just a point behind Midhurst.
This week sees the visit of Storrington to the Parrish Field and we'll be going into this game confident of picking up 3 more vital points but not under estimating a side that took us to penalties earlier in the season in the RUR cup.
Tony
20th February 2007 - Vital 3 Points
We went into Saturday's game with a determination to secure 3 vital points that would put us back in the mix for the title, we knew that we had to get back to winning ways as soon as possible and that a home game against Pagham who have been riding high this season would be a stern test.
The first half was fairly even with both sides giving as good as they got and genuine chances being few and far between, however, a bit of magic from Duncan Jones on the half hour mark created an opening for Dommie to put us one up and nine minutes later Dunc' was at it again beating his man and delivering a great cross to the near post where Danny Pepper made a great run from right midfield to send a thumping header into the roof of the net to put us 2-0 up going into the break.
We came out for the second half fully aware that Pagham would try to come out of the blocks fast and look to get back into the game but we defended as a team resolutely and made the game safe when Carl Morris headed home a great free kick from Chris Smith. The game ended on a disappointing note though when we conceded a sloppy consolation goal in the last minute.
This result will hopefully prove to be a real shot in the arm for us and be the start of another unbeaten run, however, we know that this weeks visitors (Southwick) will be no push over's and all remember that we were very fortunate to come away with a point from there earlier this season. We'll be going into this game giving Southwick the respect they deserve but will be fully determined and confident of picking up another 3 points at the Parish Field.

8th February 2007 - We Need To Get Back On Track
Saturday's defeat to Eastbourne Utd was a real disappointment to the side, we felt that although the visitors were the better side and that they were a very good footballing team we didn't do ourselves justice.
We conceded a goal early on and apart from a 10-15 minute spell were Dom hit the bar and we put them under a bit of pressure we never really managed to get going and came in behind 1 down at half time.
We came out for the second half with the plan being to increase the tempo and put Eastbourne on the back foot, however, the wind was soon knocked out of our sails when we conceded a second goal when we failed to clear a corner. Despite pushing more men forward we never really looked like getting back into the game although Mark Drinkwater forced a good save from the keeper in a one on one situation. Our day went from bad to worse when our keeper Gavin Bourne suffered a hamstring injury that forced him to be removed and replaced by Carl Morris who made 2 great saves to keep the score line down to 2.
Although Eastbourne played well and deserved to win I personally felt that we didn't do ourselves justice but credit to the visitors who were a young side that played attractive football.
Tuesday night saw us return to league action with the visit to Lingfield who haven't enjoyed the best of form recently.
We started the game well and put the hosts on the back foot with Danny Pepper going close and Duncan Jones having a goal disallowed, it took the hosts about 20 minutes to force their way back into the game and this came as a result of us becoming sloppy with our passing and giving them to much space to play resulting in the game becoming stretched. We eventually got back on top and took a deserved lead into the interval after Lawrence Brand's first goal of the season from a 25 yard free kick.
We came out for the second half and really took the game to Lingfield creating a number of good chances with Dom and Dunc in particular having great opportunities to secure the three points. However, despite dominating for the first 25 minutes of the second half we conceded a terrible goal through slack marking at a corner.
The second half mirrored that of the first and we managed to take the lead again through Lawrence's excellent 30 yard free kick (his second f the season) but no sooner had we finished celebrating re-taking the lead we then found ourselves back on level terms when we conceded yet another goal from a corner. This was a real kick in the teeth and the game became scrappy as both teams looked for the win, we were on the attack when we were caught out by a long ball over the top into the left channel and the home forward managed to check inside onto his favoured left foot to curl home to take the 3 points.
We all felt absolutely gutted afterwards and really can't believe that we left there with nothing after dominating for most of the game, however, we'll be going to Steyning this Saturday determined to get ourselves back on track and back to winning ways. One positive note to come from Tuesday's defeat was the debut of Paul Nessling in goal for the injured Gavin Bourne.

30th January 2007 - Defeat Hard To Take
Saturday saw us encounter our first defeat since September (albeit after extra time) and it has left a real bitter taste amongst the side, no one likes to lose but we felt that we had certainly done more than enough to progress into the semi-final.
We didn't start the game well and Lancing were out of the blocks quickly and you could tell that they were looking to prove a point to their committee after the recent managerial changes, we fell behind in the 9th minute through a free quick (which was harshly awarded for pulling on the edge of our box). It took us about 20 minutes to get into our stride and from then on in we spent the remainder of the first half on the front foot. We thought we'd drawn level when Danny Pepper rolled the centre half and fired home only for the goal to be ruled out for off side, we found this confusing as when Danny received the ball the centre half was standing behind him, to be fair it was one of many confusing decisions from the officials.
We went out at the start of the second half determined to turn the game around and spent the game on the front foot camped in the Lancing half, we managed to draw level following a goal mouth scramble when AJ nodded home from close range. After this I felt that there was only going to be one winner and we again had a goal ruled out for offside when Dom managed to head home, according to our chairman who was standing behind the linesman the defender was goal side of Dom when the cross was put in, we then had a decent penalty shout waved away when Danny got in front of the defender to be pushed over and although the referee admitted he was pushed he felt that it wasn't a penalty ?? Strange decisions aside we had enough chances to have won the game and how the scores remained level when normal time finished was very frustrating.
We started extra time determined to put the game to bed but fell behind early in the first period when we lost possession in midfield and Lancing (who to be fair looked lively on the break away) took their chance well with a great strike into the far corner from their left hand side.
Despite spending the remainder of extra time camped in Lancing's half we were unable to find a finishing touch to draw level, Lancing could've and should've put the game beyond doubt when they broke away on the counter but an excellent tackle from Ashley Paine and a fine save from Gav' kept the game alive. In addition to the disappointment of losing we also saw Jamie Podmore come off injured early in the first half and Ashley Paine come off injured in extra time.
This week we welcome Eastbourne United of Division 1 to The Parish Field in the quarter final of the RUR cup, we'll certainly be looking to progress into the semi-final and get on another winning run. Obviously people will see us as the under dogs as we're in a lower division but we feel that we're good enough to be playing in division 1 and will be looking to prove this against an Eastbourne side who are sitting mid table and have enjoyed mixed results this season.

23rd January 2007 - Comfortable Victory
Our game away to Saltdean surprisingly went ahead on Saturday amidst all of the recent bad weather and credit to the Saltdean ground staff as the pitch was in a very good condition.
There was a very strong wind blowing down the pitch and coupled with a low and bright sun meant an uncomfortable first half for whoever lost the toss which unfortunately turned out to be us. We knew that Saltdean would try and take advantage of the conditions and although they pressed and harried us we managed to go in front early through Danny Pepper, unfortunately that was about the only real positive in a disjointed and uninspiring first half from both teams.
The second half saw us start a lot more positive and we managed to kill the game off with a further 2 quick goals from Danny Pepper, giving him a well deserved first hat trick in senior football. The rest of the half I felt we were comfortable and although there was a couple of threatening crosses and a half hearted penalty appeal from Saltdean I felt that defensively we always looked in control and our lead wasn't under much threat, if anything I felt that we were more likely to add to our tally.
This week see's us travel to Lancing in the Division 2 cup with the hope of being able to secure a win that will see us make the semi final, Lancing enjoyed an excellent 5-0 win against Peacehaven recently so we'll approach this game as we do any other game and give them our full respect. We're confident of beating anyone at the moment as the run of form and results that we've enjoyed recently is as good as if not better than anyone's.

17th January 2007 - Unbeaten Run Continues
Well the Westfield unbeaten run has continued for another week with us beating Division 1 side Three Bridges on penalties in what can only be described as a thriller of a game, we were confident of creating an upset going into the game and eventually after 120 minutes managed to succeed in taking their scalp on penalties.
The first half didn't start as planned as we fell behind to a lucky miss hit cross but managed to respond well after a shaky first 15 minutes and come in 2-1 up at half time with goals from Dom & Pepps.
We started the second half brightly and scored via a penalty from Boz and an own goal after Dunc's crossed was put in by the unfortunate defender, however, if anyone thought that the game was over then they hadn't told Three Bridges this as they managed to claw their way back into the game in the final 25 minutes. Credit to them they went 4 up front and gave it a real go but we were disappointed in the manner that we stopped playing the way we had done and dropped deeper and deeper inviting more pressure because of our failure to keep the ball. The job became more difficult when AJ was sent off for dissent.
In the break before extra time we managed to sort ourselves out and I felt the character of the team shone through as we certainly gave as good as we got in the additional 30 minutes and so with no extra goals the game went to penalties and fortunately for us we came out on top with Gav making 2 saves and Daryl dispatching the winning penalty.
This Saturday we travel to Saltdean who are having a tough time at the bottom of the league, we know that this is going to be a real battle but we're going into this game confident that we can pick up an important 3 points to keep our momentum going and ensure that we're well placed come Saturday evening and able to keep the pressure on the teams around us.

2nd January 2007 - Patience Was The Key
As expected Saturday's game at home to East Grinstead was a difficult encounter with East Grinstead showing why they are one of the fancied sides in the division, however, we certainly gave as good as we got and secured the win by a margin that will certainly make teams sit up and take notice.
We didn't have the start we'd planned and gave away 2 poor goals in a disappointing first half, the weather wasn't great and this had an impact on the game, although credit to Nick & Matt the pitch was in fine condition. As a side we didn't really get going but still managed to create a number of half chances. Although we were all disappointed to go in 2-0 down at half time we all felt that there was something in the game for us if we could score the next goal and knew that it was essential we didn't concede a third.
The second half didn't start as planned with yours truly having to come off with a knee injury after 10 minutes, however, this certainly didn't have a negative effect on our performance as we showed good discipline and patience before AJ halved the deficit with about 25 minutes to go. This gave us the lift we were looking for and Duncan then levelled from the spot before Carl, Dom & Darrol sealed the three points that we were after and allowed us to move into third place above East Grinstead.
Our next game is away to Lancing in the league cup and although this won't be easy we're going to go there looking to secure the win that will see us progress to the semi-finals.

27th December 2006 - Unbeaten Run Stays Intact
Boxing Day saw us visit Seaford for our first game since we beat Mile Oak on the 9th December, the break in games came at a bad time for us as we've been on a very good run and would've liked the games to have kept coming on a regular basis. We went into this game determined to not only keep our unbeaten run going but to also avenge the 4-1 hammering we took earlier on in the season at Seaford.
I felt that we created the clearer chances in the first half and on another day could've gone in 3-0 up at half time, although credit to Seaford they gave as good as they got in terms of putting pressure on us when we had the ball and looked to get in behind our back line when they could, their main threat came from set pieces but we defended resolutely with Gavin Bourne again excelling between the sticks. The main talking point of the first half came when Danny Pepper rounded the goal keeper to be denied a goal by a last ditch tackle from a covering defender which we felt was a foul but the referee agreed with the home side and said the defender played the ball.
We took control of the game early on in the second half and really put Seaford on the back foot which at times saw them camped in their half for long periods, however, as the game wore on and opportunities came and went Seaford began to grow in confidence and gradually worked their way back into the game, again they proved a threat from set pieces but we were resolute in our defending and prevented them from any clear cut chances.
I suppose before the game a point away from home and a clean sheet against one of the better teams in this division would've been viewed as a decent result but I can't help look back and regret not coming away with all 3 points when I think about the chances we created but we've managed to extend our unbeaten run and will go into this Saturday's clash at home to East Grinstead full of confidence that we can remain unbeaten and take what would be a valuable 3 points from one of the favoured teams in Division 2.

11th December 2006 - Character Shines Through
Another game at the Parish Field and another 3 points to Westfield, I wish it was as easy as it sounds.
Mile Oak came into this game sitting just below mid table and having not been on the best run of late, however, if anyone thought that we were going to stroll to 3 points they were mistaken as Mile Oak went in 1-0 up at half time. We created a few decent chances in what was an even first half but fell behind to what Mile Oak will certainly feel was a very good team goal although we're disappointed to have gone to sleep after dealing with a corner. We all knew that Mile Oak would be a physical game and that we would have to stand up and be counted, the bottom end of the pitch was extremely heavy and boggy with all the rain that we've had recently and we found it difficult to clear our lines which, although it's testament to all the hard work that Mat and Nick have done on the pitch this season that the game went ahead and played as well as it did.
Half time saw us regroup and we came out firing in the second half scoring early on with Boz on the score sheet yet again, from then on I felt that we were the better team and would go on to win, although credit to Mile Oak they made us work for the 3 points. The game turned following the inspired substitutions that saw the introductions of super subs Duncan Jones & Mark Drinkwater (both scoring) mid way through the second half, as a side we're delighted to keep the unbeaten run going and are obviously full of confidence at the moment.
This week coming we welcome Division 1 side Three Bridges in the RUR cup, I guess that being from a league above us they'll be favourites but we'll certainly be going into the game full of confidence looking for a win. We all hope that they'll be a good size crowd and hope that the weather dries out this week so that both teams can put on an entertaining game and we can pull off a supposed upset.

4th December 2006 - Playing The Conditions
Saturday saw us continue our recent fine form when we managed to beat St Francis 1-0 at home, it certainly wasn't a great footballing spectacle as the Friday & Saturday down poor of rain meant the pitch (which has been very good of late) became very heavy and warranted a more direct approach to the game.
Again we defended well as a side and took the lead through a fine finish by Dom', St Francis are a better side than their league position suggests and this showed as they put us under pressure during what I felt was an even first half. However, I certainly felt we gave as good as we got and we looked threatening when we got into the final third.
We started the second half brightly and were certainly the better side, this pressure resulted in the St Francis central defender being sent off for hauling back Danny Pepper when he was clean through on goal. This incident created a lot of ill feeling amongst the St Francis side but he was the last defender and by the letter of the law deserved to be sent off. I felt that we failed to make the most of the additional man and our work rate seemed to drop after this and we almost paid the price but Gavin Bourne made a great save to keep our lead intact.
Although the footballing performance wasn't as good as we would've hoped for we would have all took 3 points and a clean sheet before the game so it was job done really.
This week we welcome Mile Oak to the Parish Field in what I'm sure will be a test to our recent unbeaten run but I'm sure that if we continue to show the same desire to win and can continue to create chances then we'll be able to continue our fine form.

20th November 2006 - Revenge Is Sweet
The last 2 games against Peacehaven & Wealden were always going to be tough encounters and to come out of both games with 6 points and having scored 7 goals and conceded only 2 is a testament to how well the side's playing at the moment.
We'd been looking forward to Saturday's game with Wealden ever since they beat us so convincingly at their place earlier this season, this result really has put us back amongst the mix at the top of the league and we're all looking forward to pushing on and continually improving.
We were surprised that Wealden changed their normal passing game and adopted a more direct approach, we did well in preventing them from any real clear cut chances in the first half and I felt we deservedly went in 1-0 up at half time through Danny Pepper's second goal in as many games. At half time we were well aware that they would come out fired up for the second half and we held out for the normally all important first 15 minutes of the second half, we then proceeded to get on top of the game and created a number of chances to have killed the game off.
Then well into the latter stages of the game we surrendered possession in our own half and allowed Wealden to break and when we failed to deal with the resulting cross Gav' saved the first attempt but was powerless to prevent the rebound from being bundled home, this was a goal that could so easily have been prevented. As we approached the end of the game we still felt confident of securing the 3 points as we'd created numerous chances through out the course of the game, it was Boz who stepped up to seal the 3 points from a free kick after Danny Pepper was cynically brought down by one of the Wealden defenders. This goal meant 5 in 5 for Boz who's been in excellent goal scoring form lately.
We turn our attentions to an away trip to Saltdean this weekend who are certainly going to be fighting for the points as they're at the wrong end of the table, we'll approach the game in the way we normally do and treat them the same as any other team as we look to continue our unbeaten run and take maximum points.

13th November 2006 - Peacehaven Thumped
Saturday saw us entertain a Peacehaven side that enjoyed an excellent October which resulted in them earning the team of the month award in recognition of their results.
As a side we expected a tough game and knew that we had to be at the races in order to secure the vital 3 points that would continue our recent good form. We started the game as well as we could've wanted and deservedly took the lead when Danny Pepper put us one nil up, Pepps was really looking to make the most of his recall to the side in place of the unavailable Duncan Jones and he didn't disappoint scoring 1 and creating a further 2 in the first half (Dom Clark & yours truly scoring the goals).
I felt we deserved the lead at half time and although Peacehaven enjoyed a decent spell of possession they never really threatened with the result being built on a strong team work ethic and desire to keep a clean sheet.
The second half saw us kill the game off early on when Dom scored his second of the afternoon before Peacehaven pulled a goal back with a decent strike from distance although as a side we were disappointed with the lack of pressure on the strike. We finished the scoring with a goal scored by Boz who since moving to left midfield has really found the goal trail (4 in 4), the move for this goal was swift and decisive with Carl Morris clearing a Peacehaven cross which found David Miller out wide on our right, Windy broke the length of the pitch and delivered a pin point cross for Boz to tap home.
This week coming we welcome Wealden to the Parish Field with memories of our drubbing at their place still fresh in the mind and the incentive that they are only 5 points clear of us in 3rd having played a game more, we'll be looking to put on a performance and capture maximum points in what is always a fiercely fought encounter and normally a decent game.

9th November 2006 - Cup Success
Saturday saw us welcome Lingfield to the Parish Field in the Div 2 cup, this was a game that we were extremely keen to win as this is a competition that we feel we can do well in. We started the game brightly and deservedly took the lead, however, due to some misfortune in front of goal we only went in at 1-0 with the Lingfield bar having been rattled 3 times in the first half.
The second half was a bit scrappy but we managed to score a further 2 goals and grind out a deserved 3-0 win against a Lingfied side that had enjoyed some impressive results this season and at times looked as though they would be a handle for most sides in this division.

2nd November 2006 - Home at Last
It's been a long time coming but a home fixture was welcomed by everyone at the club.
We expected a tough game against a Saltdean side that had a great result last week and for an hour it proved to be a real battle, we may have dominated most of the possession but we just couldn't seem to finish the game off until we managed to pinch a second midway through the second half. After that we ran away with the game and it was good that both Duncan and Dom were amongst the goals.
We created numerous chances and in all honesty could've scored more than five with yours truly missing a couple of sitters, it's always pleasing to win by a substantial margin and to keep a clean sheet as well made the result even more pleasing.
This week coming we entertain Lingfield in the Div 2 cup, this is a competition that all teams fancy their chances in and I'm sure that Lingfield will be as much up for this as we'll be. Lingfield have enjoyed a good start to life in Division 2 since their promotion last season and it'll be interesting to play against them and see for ourselves how good they are.
We've managed a final appearance and a semi-final appearance in this competition previously and we're all looking to get a run going that will lead to success this season.
Tony
20th September 2006 - Disappointment
Saturday's result was a major disappointment as it was our first league defeat of the season, the performance particularly in the first half was not as positive as we had hoped for and looking back I would say that the better team won although our second half performance was an improvement and showed encouraging signs.
St Francis certainly had the better of the first half and with clinical finishing would've been home and dry by half time, good goal keeping from Gavin and a lot of luck meant that we got to half time 0-0. We came out looking to make a dramatic improvement but went behind to a goal that we really shouldn't have conceded but we managed to hit back quickly and I felt from then on looked the more likely side to take all 3 points with a number of chances being created. However, in the 86th minute we failed to deal with a long clearance from the goal keeper and this allowed St Francis to take all 3 points.
This week we welcome Worthing United from Division 1 in the John O'Hara cup, we normally raise our game against teams from the higher leagues and I hope that this week will be no exception, we're all looking to get back to winning ways and building on our improved second half showing against St Francis, the one thing that we know is that we've a side of good character that tends to bounce back quickly, I'm confident that we can get our season back on track this Saturday.
Tony
12th September 2006 - Cup Drubbing
Saturday's result brought everyone back down to earth with a bang, we'd all been on a high following recent performances and last weeks result. However, we never got started against a well organised and committed Seaford side, I thought that we'd gotten over the poor start when Windy levelled and that if we could get in at half time 1-1 then we'd be able to re-group and come out firing for the second half. As it turned out 2 goals minutes before the break changed that and we ended up 3-1 down, we started the second half well and created numerous chances but we really needed to score early to be able to put Seaford under pressure and have a chance of clawing something out of the game. The final nail in the coffin came when they scored a fourth mid way through the second half which pretty much ended the game as a contest.
We have no complaints about the result and there's no doubting that we were well below par for what should've been a game that we had a decent chance of winning, the only positives to come out of Saturdays performance was the impressive performances from our young debutants (Milton & Matt), both came on and did very well. The side know that the performance wasn't acceptable and that if we want to be in with a shout of winning trophies this year then we need to turn up every week and be able to win games when we're not playing well.
We're all looking forward to making amends when we return to league action away at St Francis on Saturday, they've had some indifferent results so far this season but picked up an impressive 4-1 at home to Mile Oak on Saturday. Games between ourselves & St Francis are normally an open game so I'm sure that it should be entertaining, we're going to go there looking to bounce back and pick up 3 valuable points.
Tony
5th September 2006 - First Three Points Delight
We're all delighted to have picked up our first 3 points of the season, our first half performance was extremely pleasing as we bossed the game and went in with a deserved 2-0 lead at half time, we knew that they'd come out firing for the second half but we started brightly and should've put the game to bed by going three up, however, we conceded a couple of sloppy goals and ended up battling to keep a 3-2 lead when in all honesty we should've been able to play our football and enjoy the game.
Looking forward we visit Seaford this week in the Sussex Senior Cup and will be going there confident of progressing to the next round, we have a mixed record against Seaford but we're confident of being able to secure the win.
Tony
31st August 2006 - Late Goal Heartbreak
After the turbulent last couple of weeks our first home game was always going to be an emotional but anticipated day, we were looking to pick up our first win of the season and wanted to put on a good display. I think that our performance was good however the fact that we conceded a late goal and dropped 2 points so late in the game after dominating for the majority of it resulted in a very disappointed dressing room afterwards.
This week we're back on our travels again to Midhurst, we're all looking forward to the game and going there determined to secure our first win of the season, we're under no illusions that despite their poor season last year it won't be easy.
Midhurst have won their last 2 games and will obviously be looking to keep their run going, however, we're determined to do something this season and in order to make that happen we need to start winning games.
Tony
22nd August 2006 - Good To Get Started
It was good to be able to get back to playing football after a traumatic fortnight for everyone at the club, I suppose on previous results at Broadbridge Heath we have to look at Saturday's result as being a
positive point although looking back at the game I believe that we should've collected 3 points.
I felt that we gave a really good account of ourselves defensively, and that right through the side we defended extremely well and looked solid.
Considering that this was our first league game and that BB have already played 2 games I thought we played some good football and created plenty of good chances particularly in the second half, I'm sure that on another day we'd have put a couple of the chances away, mind you on another day the 2 goals that were ruled out for offside would've been given.
Looking forward, we welcome Lancing to the Parish Field this week and this will be an interesting game as they've been touted as one of the sides to watch this year. I'm confident that getting the first game out of the way will do us the world of good and believe that we can go into our first home game confident of picking up maximum points.
